The Barn Owl by Ryan Chrislu

The scientific name for the Barn Owl comes from the Greek word tyto, which means owl, and alba, the Latin word for white.  The Barn Owl has also been called by other names such as Monkey-faced Owl, Ghost Owl, Death Owl, Golden Owl, Silver Owl, Night Owl, Screech Owl, Barnyard Owl and Delicate Owl.  The Barn Owl is an especially interesting bird, because it is one of the few animals on earth that is nocturnal, which means it is asleep during the day and is awake during the night.

In comparison to other owls, it is medium-sized.  It's mostly white but the upper half is light gray with little dark lines and scattered spots on the feathers.  On its back side, it is gold and brown with a rusty tinge.  It's head is round but it's face is white and distinctly heart-shaped.  The barn owl's eyes are black which stand out as different from most owls who have yellow eyes.  It has long legs and it's feet are yellow-white and sometimes brownish.

Males and females are close to the same size, but females are slightly larger.  Also, females and younger owls  have more spots.  Barn owls range from 13 to 15 inches tall, weigh between 15 and 20 ounces, and have a wingspan of 42 to 43 inches.  They are beautiful birds but people rarely get a chance to see them because they are not active during the day.
